The Oberheim Matrix-6, introduced in 1986, is a polyphonic analog synthesizer known for its advanced modulation capabilities and rich, warm sound. It’s often considered as the more affordable version of the more iconic Matrix-12. It features six voices and an extensive modulation matrix, allowing for complex and dynamic sound design. The Matrix-6 became popular for its affordability and versatility, offering features typically found in more expensive synthesizers. Artists such as Depeche Mode, Philip Glass, Astral Projection, Mouse on Mars and The Cure used the Matrix-6 to create their signature sounds.

The Oberheim Matrix-6 features six analog voices, each with two Digitally Controlled Oscillators (DCOs) providing sawtooth, triangle, and pulse waveforms. It includes a 24dB/octave resonant low-pass filter and ADSR envelope generators for detailed sound shaping. The synthesizer's extensive modulation matrix (available in all models of the Matrix series) allows for 20 modulation sources and 32 destinations, enabling complex and expressive sound design. The Matrix-6 also includes a built-in arpeggiator and advanced MIDI implementation, enhancing its versatility in various production environments. Its intuitive interface and robust build quality make it a valuable tool for both live performances and studio work.
